How practicing good emotional self-care can help with emotional eating and yo-yo dieting

Emotional self-care is the practice of taking care of your emotional well-being. It involves engaging in activities that promote self-compassion, self-awareness, and emotional regulation. Emotional self-care is important because it helps individuals navigate their feelings, increase self-empathy, and learn coping mechanisms to deal with difficult emotions. Emotional self-care can help with emotional eating and yo-yo dieting in the following ways:

Identify your feelings and triggers for emotional eating

Emotional eating is often triggered by difficult emotions such as stress, anxiety, or sadness. By identifying your emotions, you can start to develop healthier coping mechanisms. Paying attention to your feelings and noticing when you are reaching for food can help you identify patterns and triggers. Now, this is easier said than done. When food served as a "comforter" or "soother" for many years (or even decades) one can't suddenly let go of a proven coping mechanism. It takes time to replace the "eating to cope" ritual and practice new ways of navigating difficult emotions.

Practice mindfulness

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and aware in the moment, without judgment. It can be a powerful tool for managing emotional eating, as it helps you tune in to your body and your emotions. When you are mindful, you are better able to recognize when you are hungry, full, or experiencing difficult emotions. This can help you make more conscious choices about what and when you eat.

Engage in self-care activities

Self-care is any activity that promotes physical, mental, or emotional well-being. Engaging in self-care activities can help reduce stress and improve mood, which can in turn reduce the likelihood of emotional eating. Some examples of self-care activities include exercise, getting enough sleep, practicing meditation or mindfulness, spending time in nature, and engaging in creative activities, such as painting or journaling.

"True self-care is not salt baths and chocolate cake, it is making the choice to build a life you don’t need to regularly escape from." — Brianna Wiest
